Now it is all a bout praise and worship within the Church that I attend. there is significance within many Churches that I know of. However, there is a history behind it in the Methodist Church and the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME). In the early days during slavery the black community and those who abolished slavery remained in the Churches in prayer awaiting the Emancipation Proclamation being signed and coming into law by President Abraham Lincoln for the freedom of slaves. Now the significance is more about being grateful for the blessing of being carried through and into another year. Service usually ends around midnight. Just a way to bring in the new year in remembrance of your Lord and Savior. Being thankful and rejoicing his holy name. Being grateful for all he has done for us. All of us, everyone! I am sure if do a search of "watch night service" and AME church you can get a great amount of information. God bless & Happy New Year!****
