Look... Here's the scoop: I want to renovate my home such as replace some windows, redo the fireplace, create an ensuite master bath, etc... but I'd like to learn to do these things on my own. How do I learn? Any recommendations.

Get some do-it-youself books and starts and start on some small projects around your home. (something that if you really screw up, you can easily hire someone to fix). The people at places like Home Depot and Lowes can be helpful in hooking you up with supplies and kits and stuff like that.

Work your way up and gain confidence in doing bigger things. You'll also find out if you really like doing stuff like that and have the knack for it.

Then I'd ask around (work, friends, church, etc) to find somebody who knows how to do bigger stuff and is planning to do something like that on their own home. Talk to them and offer to help doing scut work in return for them teaching you how to do something new.

Hi, sounds like you have some ambitious projects. And it sounds like you will want some professional help, to make sure your work is properly anyhow.
There are many how-to books out there, where I live (upstate NY) the home improvement store have how-to clinics. Now matter how confident you are, you should find help with the things are over your head. After all, it is your house, and your wife won't be happy if you screw it up, and probably won't let you forget it either.
There are many things that will limit your projects, but more than anything else, money. Your going to have to acquire an expensive tool habit, and materials are off the scale. More than anything else you'll be limited by money. Unless your loaded, then you could hire a contractor and use his tools.

Ya, make sure you have someone w/ experience help you. Trust me, it's virtually impossible to do such a big job w/out some help from someone w/ experience. Plus for somethings (eg electric) you have to hire someone who is licensed by the state. GL there's lots of sites that will tell how to do what you want. Just do a search.

Look up DIY websites. Go to your local Home Depot etc.. There are some things you really need to leave to the professionals. Windows are one of them. My husband tried to replace a bathroom window, he had a h*ll of a time. We recently had all our windows replaced. It was expensive, but well worth it. You definitely need to find out about codes (I think they are called) for any electrical work you do.

There are a couple of ways to do it: either go to your library, to the do it yourself section, and check out books(which is nice because alot of them will show step by step methods) or get out that vcr ordvr and start recording program from dyi or home and garden network. both of those channels can show you how to do any job. plus i believe dyi has a show where you can call or write to get answers to your questions. why record? it will give you a reference to go back to if you forget something. I hope this helps.
