I work in mental health and through them, the school system and DCFS foster care children. I've seen many foster parents and as a testiment to one lady (not because of her age but because of her patience, calm nature, and love of the children she gets) I have to say the oldest foster mother we have is by far the best. She's over 60 years old and has kept 3 children at any given time (for a couple of years each at least). The ages of them have ranged from twin boys 1 year old to preteens. The only ages she doesn't feel comfortable with are the teenagers because of the physical and emotional demands with all those raging defiant hormones.

I applaud your desire to be a foster parent. Your age won't have anything to do with it. Good luck and God Bless!

When I was 8, the foster parents I was placed with were 66 and 67. They had adopted a girl a year younger than I was. I think they could have fostered any age because they were physically fit and able to keep up with a newborn clear up to a teen. A few years later they chose to retire, but I think they could still be licensed now, in their 80s if they wanted to and they would be really great at it still. It is all about what you can handle.

Ages 6 years up would be easier to handle. At that age they can eat, go toilet etc by themselves. You should foster a child quite young so that by the time they become teenagers they appreciate you.

You are still young. DSS, DFS, DCF or whatever they call it in your state will do a background check to determine if you are suitable. They will also be looking into your housing and financial situation. They will want to know why you want to do this as I do? Is it because you love children and want to share your home or is it for monetary purposes? Raising troubled kids can be a huge challenge one that should not be taken lightly.
