How do you spin cotton from cotton plants?

Question

This is for personel use and not as a business. I love the look of cotton plants and would like to utlize them. I have learned to make dish clothes from cotton thread, so therefore would like to spin cotton.

After harvesting the cotton boles are de seeded (seeds are edible), the resulting fiber mass is combed then using a spindle it is spun into thread. Here is a link:

the fully mature cotton pods are harvested from the plant,the outer hard covering is removed,seeds taken out of the cotton fluff & then it is ready to spin,as a household venture or hobby you would use a spinning wheel.The cotton is gently twisted & fed into the gadget,while the movement of the wheel spins it into a thread.

Both of the above answers are basically true except they are forgetting the carding aspect. You have to card it to get the fibers straight.
