Licensing for Security Guards came into effect across England and Wales on 20 March 2006.

It is now illegal to work as a security guard without an S.I.A. (Security Industry Authority) licence. This will cost you £190 to make an application.

Depending on the venue and type of gig you will need one of the new SIA licences. The best one to get is the door supervisors licence as this can be used for static guarding too. The downside is you need a qualification in Door Supervision (two exams at Level 2) BIIAB accredit the qualifications. Once gained you can then apply for the licence £190 for 5years. Venues are always looking for licenece holders and some companies will put you through the qualification. You will also have a Criminal Records Check

I should think you would need to be employed by the security firm that covers the gigs.

Apply to the venue directly, they will tell you the procedure - it's different for each place. Good luck!
