It's been awhile since I've done a system restore so bear with me, I'll be remembering while I type. Reboot your computer. After the post, you will see the Microsoft (copyright thingy) and the little bar under it going from left to right. (basically the loading bar) When you see that, hold down the power putton on your computer to shut to off. When you do this, Windows will recognize this as a failed reboot, and prompt System Restore on the next boot. So go ahead and turn your computer on, and it will automatically go into system restore. Now when you see the old school Windows 98 looking window come up, and its trying to scan your computer for faults, hit cancel, or end, or whatever to stop it, because it won't find anything wrong anyway. Up will come a menu, it may take a bit. click on "Restore Previous state" or something like that (should be about 6 buttons or so to chose from) Basically you are going to pick a restore point based on a date that Vista saved when it does whatever the hell it does, pick the earliest date you find, then restore it and let the process go through. Last time I did this on a failed windows update, I remember everytime I clicked something it took forever, so be patient and try to use some common sense. You're goal is to "restore" windows to a saved setting before whatever the hell happened to your computer. This isn't going to affect "bloatware". Google it. (Wikipedia: "Software bloat".

depends on what settings you want to default to. Start with the control panel and go through the display settings, sound settings, and also open up the add/remove programs and click on the windows components and see if theres anything "turned off" that shouldn't be. If you just want everything on the computer to be reset to the originals, then reinstalling windows is the easiest way to go.
