The seconds pendulum
The idea of basing units of length on nature had been advocated far before it reached definitive success with the advent of the French Revolution. Though there were also proposals to relate the unit of length to the size of Earth, the unit that came out quite naturally 9 -- or at least this was the proposal that had most consensus -- was the length of a pendulum oscillating with a given, well defined period.

Consider a simple pendulum.....It is a bob of mass(say m) attached to a non-extensible massless string of length, say l which is fixed at the other end. Note gravity is acting downwards.
Now, we know the time period T=1/(2pi) X (l/g)^(1/2) where g = accl. due to gravity.
Now when m and l are such that T=2 seconds, the pendulum is called as seconds pendulum as a single swing takes 1 second.

.....and since no one bothered; the length of said pendulum would be ~ 0.9936 m = gT²/(4ϲ)
