A change in dates from 2006 to 2007 isn't really that important. It means very little in the overall scheme of things. If universal peac e were suddenly to break out on the 27 February, that would be important, far more than a new calendar being put up
And to Amy - in the UK non essential businesses do virtually close down from 12 noon on Christmas Eve (or on the Friday before Christmas if Christmas Even is a Saturday or Sunday), and they don't reopen until 9am on 2 Jnauary. Quite a change from the days of my youth when I all I had off was Christmas Day and Boxing Day, I even worked New Years Day!

You have one day off for the new year holiday because the Fed. Govt. employees wanted the day off with pay, and the congress thought it was a good idea. There are plenty of people who do not get the day off, or get a substitute day off, I know lots of nurses who work both Christmas eve, Christmas day new years eve and day. So Darn, I really feel for those who only have one day off, next you will want them to move the holiday to a Fri. or Mon. so you will have a long weekend and then you can forget what the holiday is all about.

New Years is not a very important holiday thats why you only get one day off if its on a week day. Its just a celebration of the new year coming in. It has no significant religous or goverment value. Its sort of like Valentines day. You celebrate it but nothing shuts down because of it. Just a party.

One day off? I worked xmas eve, xmas day and im working tonight, new years eve! I love it, in a pub, talking to all the people and enjoying the atmosphere without the hangover in morning.......i guess its just the career path we take, perhaps you should train to be a teacher, they get loads of holidays and are finished by 4pm....you do have to work a bit from home but surely its better than job your currently in? Enjoy your day off and if one day isnt enough for you dont drink as much tonight ;-)

A lot of people will have taken a week or more off for Christmas AND New Year, so one day for New Year is quite sufficient.

It is important but I don't see why we would need two days off. What I do think would be good, however, is if all non-essential businesses close between Christmas and New Year.

It's not that important, though I suppose it depends on where you live. Heck, take all the time off you need! Happy New Year!
