The Brown vs. Board of Education case in 1954 meant that segregation in schools was illegal. This meant that southern schools had to admit blacks. when it looked as though this was not going to happen in Little Rock, Arkansas due to the actions of the white people in Little Rock, goaded by Arkansas governor Orval Faubus, there were near riots and the nine black students who tried to enroll in Little Rock's Central High couldn't get in to the building. Challenged now by Faubus and the Little Rock's dismissal and attempted ignoring of the Brown ruling, President Dwight D. Eisenhower mandated that states follow national law and sent in the 101st Airborne to help the nine black students get to and from school on a daily basis for a while.
