There's lots to do in California. Here's my California choices:
1. Yosemite National Park. This park has awesome scenery...huge granite mountains and beautiful waterfalls. Visitors come from all over the world. It's about 4 hours east of San Francisco. http://www.nps.gov/yose
2. Lake Tahoe. This crystal clear lake is located in the Sierra Nevadas where you will see snowcapped mountains even in the summer. There's lots of outdoor activities. It's about 4 hours east of San Francisco as well. http://www.tahoevacationguide.com/...
3. San Francisco. This city is located in Northern California. It's a beautiful location on the Bay that's famous for it's nightlife, museums, and theater. Bicycle across the Golden Gate Bridge, take a ferry to Sausilito. http://onlysf.sfvisitor.org/
4. Napa Valley. This is the prime wine growing region in the United States. It's a scenic valley with wonderful wineries and world class dining. It's about an hour from San Francisco. http://www.cheers2wine.com
5. San Diego. This is a gorgeous city located in Southern California just 20 minutes from the border with Mexico. There's lots of outdoor activities as well as the famous San Diego Zoo.

I've traveled quite a bit around the southern and eastern portions of the US... and I've got a few places that I personally have found "can't miss".
Northern New Nexico mountains. I liked Colorado, but I thought New Mexico was unmatched in its beauty and relative quietness. I'm not sure if there are any particularly lavish places to stay, but perhaps the lack of the touristy spots is what makes it so refreshing?
Going on drives through any of the agricultural belt during growing season. Some of my favorite memories are trips through Indiana or Michigan.
St. Louis. The arch. The river. Beautiful skyline. Maybe take in a baseball game? Quite a lot to do. And compared to most of the south, it's generally not quite as overly toasty (not to guarantee you won't hit the extreme heat).
And there's always my home state of Florida. You've got your theme parks, you've got your beaches, and you've got quite a lot to do. It's kinda muggy in the summer, but the storms each afternoon come through and leave quite refreshing evenings.
A couple other spots that I haven't had much experience with are California and New York. In my one visit to California, I went to the Monterey area south of San Fran, and it was stunning beautiful... that was last May.
Never been to NYC...but I have got to think that's someone everyone should do at some point... and I can't for a second not recommend it, because I'm sure with all you can do, the weather, and such, it's a great place to go.
All-in-all, lots of options. Depends if you have kids or not, and what kind of stuff you enjoy. Perhaps supply some more information as to what you are looking for or what other vacations you have enjoyed and why?
Wish you well!

It really depends what you're into. If it's history you seek, I recommend Richmond, VA (civil war stuff, Jamestown, Jamestown Plantation, etc.), Hyde Park, NY (Roosevelt, Samuel B. Morse, Vanderbuilt, Mills Mansion, etc.) If you like adventure with water, I recommend the Delaware Water Gap in Pennsylvania off Route 209. (Bushkill Falls, Pocono region) You have the Grand Canyon out west (Northern Arizona), Mertle Beach in the Carolinas is nice. If you like lighthouses, I recommend Okracoke Island, and Cape Hatteras. If you like military museums, The USS Nautilus, USS Forrestal, USS Intrepid, etc are all available. Hope this helps.

It's hard to beat So Cal in the Summer.
You have the beaches
Disneyland
Knott's
Universal Studios
And lots of nightlife.
Drive from L.A. to San Diego for the day and then go into Tijuana, Mexico for a fun day of shopping.
Have fun!

If you want razzle dazzle go to Vegas. If you want misery go to New York. If you want pretty and pretenious (and maybe mud slides) go to California. If you speak Mexican or Cuban Spanish and don't mind hurricanes go to Florida. If you believe in UFO's go to New Mexico. If you like flat plains and corn and soybeans go anywhere in the middle of the US. If you like a pleasant temperature, friendly mountains, friendly people, and lots to see and do, go to the mountains of North Carolina and Tennessee.
