You can buy a cable from tesco for around £3. One end plugs into the headphone socket on your mp3 player and the other plugs into the phono sockets on your amp.

there is little point, in my view, in buying an MP3 player to act as a HIFI... why because the MP3 process compresses the signal and removes what is largely surplus / redeundant information. However if you play an MP3 over Hifi set up then you will notice the differences made between an MP3 & CD, or MP3 & LP.
The problem is going to be finding an MP3 player with a suitable output (electrically). there are devices that allow an MP3 players output ot be connected to a cassette tape adapter.. these seem to work OK.
However I have recently come accross a device that plugs into a Mp3 output socket that acts as a FM transmitter... you tune a conventional FM radio to the same frequency as the tranmsmitter and it should work OK. A eword of caution,as I found out recently in London it can be difficult to find a spare frequency in London.. it seesm to be inundated with pirate radio & local radio hoggig virtually all the wavelength.
The transmitter is available from AdvancedMP3 players fopr around £15

I use my iPod, with a cable from the headphone socket. A friend of mine has his on a docking station with the bottom connection used (slightly better quality sound) Both setups, use the inputs on the rear of our amplifiers and output to Floor Standing Mission Speakers! Quality is no problem.
If you want a piece of kit that looks like a "Stereo Separates Unit", you will find several but I cannot exactly remember the make ( think it was Archos)
Remember, unless you are on "top end" kit using optical links etc you will not hear any difference between best quality MP3 and CD.

http://www.myspace.com/soundonthego Clickon the Head-Fi link in the profile, sign up for an account, and do your research there.
There are many MP3 players with hard drives, many portable amps (such as the Hornet, Tomahawk, Go-Vibe V5, Cmoy, Little Dot Micro, etc) And many many more High end In Ear Monitors.
And Just FYI, Your question is going to be beyond the average yahoo user. But do yourself a favor and research those head-fi forums before just shooting in there and asking for a quick and easy answer, because there isn't one. Take time out to do the research, or you won't be well received.

Yes you can buy an imoves speakers and docking station thats £39.99 or a logic3 mip107 for £59.99 and an apple ipod hi-fi for £229.99. Bose do one for £249.00
You can plug an ipod into a hifi system,i've done it myself, but to be honest you have to crank up the volume on the hifi and the ipod. its better to buy a standalone system just for the ipod.

I found one today. And you don't need a music profile on myspace like many people will tell you. You can find it on www.projectplaylist.com
