I have a monthly contract, but I don't pay a monthly charge, hence I cannot upgrade. I want to keep this set up as it is very cheap, but I woud like to get a new phone. The pay-as-you-go phones are cheaper, so I was wondering whether I could just buy a pay-as-you-go phone (Orange) and then use my Orange Sim card.

yes you should be able to put the contract sim in to the pay as you go phone. If you go to a phone shop they would probabaly let you try this to make sure, though they may try to offer you all srts of fabulous contracts to get an even better phone

It seems to me that you can only do this if either the sim is an Orange one, or if the pay-as-you-go phone is "unlocked". This can normally be done for about £10 in those random little shops you find round and about (you know the ones I mean, surely).

Yes I think so, you should be able to use any handset that you put your SIM card into.
