my guinea pig had 3 large lumps and had to have 2 operations but they were abcesses not tumours. i know guinea pigs are very prone to lumps and bumps but not entirely sure why! and please ignore the idiot's answer below mine, guinea pigs in general are prone to fatty lumps and even when they develop tumours these are rarely cancerous. if you're worried just take your pig to the vets. good luck!

There are a lot of reasons. Some are genetically prone to tumors, just like humans. Some guinea pig foods also contain ethoxyquin, which is known to cause cancer in animals.

Many years ago before all of my cats I had a guinea pig named Jeremy. He loved the chew sticks but a piece got weged in a gum that turned into a tumor and sadly eventually he died. I don't know if this is rare. Maybe someone else knows????

Age can be a factor. As they age, cellular regeneration can go a bit wonky. My last GP Daisy got cancer but it was only because she also got the runs that I found out she was ill. She was about 6 years old and that's a fair old age. She passed peacefully a while later, without needing to have to have her put to sleep.
The only creature not to get any cancer is the shark; one very good reason to encourage conservation of these beasts, so we can figure out why.

Some cells in a certain place start to grow rapidly and not in conjunction with other cells. They morph into a tumor when they start growing out of control.
