Try reinstalling the drivers, you can download this usually from the manufacturer of the motherboard or soundcard.

You can also try reinstalling the device from the device manager in xp. Right click on my computer, choose properties choose hardware tab and device manager. Any devices with a problem will have a yellow symbol beside them. Right click on the device and choose update driver. If this doesn't work choose uninstall and reboot windows it should then find the device as a newly connected device and reinstall it

it's definitely a hardware problem
check ur speakers for a loose connection
then check ur sound card
u can most probably fix ur speakers, but i dunno about the sound card
u may have to probably buy a new one
