I have a UK degree and experience in teaching English to non-native speakers but no formal TEFL qualification. I know you can get jobs without it. Can anyone recommend an agency or school/college that they've worked with.? I speak basic/ intermediate portuguese and am happy to work in any areas of Brazil

Congratulations, you have good prospects for landing a job at a reputable school. As abovementioned, the British Council should be your starting point. It is not present in many cities and some branches were closed as Brazil is no longer in their list of priority countries, but it still has close links with several institutions.

In addition, it is a huge country, with very different markets and socio-economic realities. From my experience, there aren't many specialised agencies, it is more of a matter of job-hunting in the right places. Demand for EFL/ESOL teachers is great, but not all schools are equipped for quality teaching, if you know what I mean. To get references of schools it would help if you could narrow down a few cities. Franchise schools like Wizard, Wisdom and CCAA are to be avoided as staff is usually little qualified and their 'methodology' probably defies most of the best practices you have learned in your EFL training.

Below follows a link for the national TESOL association. Hope that helps and feel free to contact me.

you will locate distinctive English education jobs without CELTA or the countless qualification. Dont even think of of you would be able to stay handing over pizzas or as a waiter, no way. on the countless hand interior sight english instructors are in large call for. Now, João Pessoa is a amazing city, yet I even have not have been given any concept what the needs for english instructors are.

I would highly recommend the British Council.
Their website is :

If you get recruited in the UK your salary will be higher, but it may be easier to obtain a local contract.
Then you will need a Brazilian Work permit, but the BC will help you.
Boa Sorte.
