First, end the friendship. Cut emotional ties you have to him.
Second, there is little you can do about getting the money back. You did not have him sign a contract or promisory note.
I am sorry this had to happen to you. Don't let it affect your other friendships though. Just be careful the next time someone asks you for money.

Do you have any proof that you lent him the money -- a cancelled check or even a witness or two? If so you can take him to small claims court (no lawyers needed) and try to get it back. If not, you may just have to chalk this up to a very expensive lesson learned.

I actually met someone who had a similar situation and took her case through one of the TV judges (if I recall it was Judge Joe Brown)... anyway... she won and received an enforceable judgement that led to her getting her money back.
Good luck... what a ratty guy. Sounds like he never truly was a friend but a loser and a user... please be careful in the future and always paper such transactions or have a responsible and reputable witness.

Damn, i feel that one..."have similar troubles right now".
If you have proof of the loan, take his *** to small claims court.
If not, consider the money and friendship gone, i would'nt go any further in trying to get the $ back, it might just cause more bullshit for you.
I do the same: Next time someone needs cash, friend, family, partner, make out a small "I.O.U" on a piece of paper and both you and that person sign it! add any payment details to it too
Best wishes...

If you didn't get anything in writing, you may have a hard time proving that you gave him money. Do you have any type of receipts? Bank slip? Check?
Go to your local District Magistrate and explain situation. They may give you some guidelines on how to approach getting your money back without bringing legal action against him.
Good luck. Did we learn anything from this? I hope so....

I was in your situation just that maybe the amt was not huge though and i was kinda lost so i kinda told him that i would call the cops and report as fraud. But by doing this you should clearly know that things would go sour and you might not be friends anymore

if you wrote up a little thing that stated that you lent him the money and he was to pay you back, and you both signed it..it is a written contract, and you can take him to small claims court. however if you didnt...then go find his car....strip it and sell the parts. you will get your money back either way.

try to make a letter made a lawyer, lawyer's letter scares people of getting trouble in court or even in jail, document all transactions with him. try to irritate him by asking your money everyday....tell your common friends too...make him embarrass to other people... hope it helps, he should learn a lesson
