I am going to a wedding in Shimotsuke in Tochigi Prefecture. I am flying from Atlanta to Tokyo-Narita Airport on Delta Airlines. How do I get from Narita Airport to Shimotsuke using the public transportation system, i.e., the bus and rail network?

There is bus that goes directly from Narita airport to Oyama, Tochigi. From Oyama take a Tohoku main line local train one stop to Koganei station and you are in Shimotsuke. The alternative is to go from Ueno or Tokyo station on the bullet train to Oyama, but that would be much more expensive.

Here's a website that can help you with train schedules: www.jorudan.co.jp/english/norikae/

For buses try: www.japanbuses.com

They should be able to speak English well at the airport's info counters. In general when you are in Japan, speak slowly and clearly to them and use simple English. The one's who know some English have little exposure and battle to understand a native speaker rambling on at high speed!

You should try using this website:

I tried using this website to check for you, but there was 2 results for Shimotsuke, and i didn't know which to choose from. So it's better for you to check it out on your own.
But you would definitely have to change lots of trains throughout your trip. And you'd have to spend quite a few hours to travel to that place.
