Because the rest don't get caught?

Cotton Table's figures are interesting, but are an estimate from a report in 1997 of the chances of an individual going to prison in his or her lifetime based on the 1991 imprisonment rates.

Regardless of whether these numbers are exactly accurate, they probably do represent reality today: the chances of a black man getting arrested are considerably greater on a percentage basis than Hispanic or White.

There are far too many reasons to be able to answer this in a simple paragraph or two. Sociological factors such as poverty, the family unit, education and location. Anyone who thinks the reasons are simple just doesn't understand what's going on.

What this clearly indicates is that the current system isn't equitable and changes need to be made. I have no answer beyond saying that the present system of imprisonment is not sufficiently unattractive to offset the desirability of committing a crime. The negative reinforcement of imprisonment probably should be augmented with increasing positive incentives to not commit crimes.

This is a tough, important problem, too important to dismiss with a racist joke or quip.

For this to be a topic, not merely an engaging statistic, you want to reveal that a black guy has extra danger of penitentiary than a white one for a similar crime. there are a approach of the reason why some social communities (not all defined by shade!) bypass in for crime. Punishing those stuck is easily area of the answer, yet breaking apart the way of existence which inspires crime (by providing education, discipline, possibilities....) must be the different area. right here and there a set seems proof against all or any of the above, and regrettably for themselves, will stay punished. we've such cultures, from all races, right here contained in the united kingdom. What this is like contained in america i do not understand before everything-hand.

I believe we lost how important the family structure in African American culture, the role of mother, father, sister, brother, aunts, uncle, grandparents, and extended family. These parts are important for the success of any child in America. We as the extended family (black society) have to instill hope for the child (man or women) to be successful in America through teaching the importance of education, family, and being the best man or women possible. We need to discuss to black women the importance of a man being the best for you and family and not to settle for anything less. If you don't have goals for men, then why would the want to better themselves.

Your figures are incorrect but the real percentage is way too high.
Young black males need better role models. Gang members, spoiled sports stars & rappers just aren't good people to emulate.

They don't, my barely literate friend.

That statistic is not true, it's not even close to being true.

According to the US DOJ, it breaks down like this...

The percent of men who will go to prison by
age is as follows:

Age White Men Black Men Hispanic Men
Birth 4.4% 28.5% 16.0%
20 4.1 25.3 14.8
25 3.0 17.3 11.1
30 2.1 10.8 8.6
35 1.5 6.5 6.8
40 1.1 3.6 4.3
45 0.8 2.1 3.0

How do you take half a black man to jail? What do you do with the other half of him?

It's how they were raised.

They lack education, respect, literacy, and so on.
Their culture is dark.
But, hopefully, this will change.

Maybe society is failing to nuture young black males. Identity could be a large factor etc ... Its a shame that we cant give the youngster a better beginning.
