has anyone else had this experience. I've heard how great this book is, but it seems to skip around so much that it hard to make head or tails of what is going on. Am I alone in this?

You my friend are so not alone. I found not just the book, but the movie to be lacking. Many book and movie critics blasted the movie not from a religious perspective..but well because it was just plain stupid. The Da Vinci Code unfortunately became one of theose books that through word of mouth and fear of not being in the 'in' crowd snowbaled out fo control..It's a crappy book.

A few pages? Stick with it but consider your past reading habits, are you looking for an instant Hit? Fast pace'd, stuff happening? or do you want a story? Have you read Clan of the Cave Bears? The growth of the story tells the story and Davinci is similar but not as long.
Take your time to Read and Understand instead of reading for the Emotional High.

Stay with it. It is a great read although the movie left out quite a bit and I still don't feel that Tom Hanks was the right man for the part of Robert. He just wasn't edgy enough. May I suggest that you look into reading any of the books by Steve Barry. His books are better and far more involved.

I will normally give a book about 100 pages to get me interested, after that, I put it away. I didn't have that problem with DaVinci, I guess I just wanted to be part of the "in" crowd as a previous answer suggested, but I liked it. Give it some time, it's a bit of a slow mover.

Me too.
I went back and re-read the opening chapters but still couldn't make head nor tail of what was going on.
I ended up tossing the book into the garbage can after 35 pages.

No, it was pretty cut and dry to me. Might I suggest Dr. Suess' The Cat in the Hat?
