We can't hang on to any feeling or state of being, or get back to it once it's gone, but if you're happy and you let yourself experience gratitude for that happiness, the gratitude will often bring more joy with it. The catch? If you're only using gratitude as a strategy to extend your happiness, it won't work as well. So if you find yourself realizing that you're happy in a given moment (which means that you've already started thinking about it, instead of feeling your happiness) express gratitude for that happiness and let yourself really feel that.
Let yourself feel whatever you're feeling at the time. (even the feelings we think are "negative.") This will let you stay open to your feelings, instead of closing yourself off from them. If you let yourself really feel a "negative" emotion like anger, it will pass quickly most of the time (because it's an explosion and explosions aren't usually sustainable.) Don't think about it, just feel it. If you allow yourself not to be afraid of the "negative" emotions, you'll be more open to the "positive" ones, too.
Lots of things make me happy. I agree with the answerer who said "small things." Right now, I'm enjoying my breakfast, and I don't have to be anywhere for eight hours, and I'll get some things done around the house--(and I have a house, and heat and breakfast and hours of time to myself to be grateful for) and I'm happy.
Happy New Year!

I can't see a possible way. All you could really do once you are out of that state of mind is try to fix whatever got you out of that state of mind so you could go back into the happy state of mind.
