Doesn’t that just make you think "What the he!! are these people trying to do, but make people lose data and important documents, pictures, not to mention the time it takes to re-install all the software they may use. Are there any other REAL computer tech out there that think it is just ridiculous the way some people are sure fdisking and formatting will solve minor problems that can be fixed easily? Also, if you work on computers, you know that diagnosis for issues aren't easily diagnosed over a forum unless you get specifics and many people don't even speak a tech language to convey the issues properly anyway...right? Anyone agree here, please- or is it just me?

100% agree. I often read the answers and think that they are just trying to cause the user more problems.

Everyone should be wary of theses short snipet answers.

Hi ,
I'm new to this answer site .

I agree with you that some of the advice given for small windows problems is a bit drastic . I feel that a lot of the people replying don't have a lot of experiance themselves and have probaly found that re- formating fixes their problems they also problay only use their computers for playing games and surfing . No problems to do a quick format for them .I havent seen as yet any advice about makeing seperate partitions for the operating system and other data. This is probaly a good way to do it for the next time a big crash ever hapens again if you have to re- format as you dont lose all of your personal data when you dont have another drive or burner to back up your files.

As for speaking tech language i always try to avoid that with newbies and try to explain stuff in a way most average people can understand or give specific instruictions like go to control panel click on x look for y button clik options do this then exit ect .
I have been reading some of your posts.
Your answers are always easy to understand keep up the good work.

I am personally a big fan on fdisk. I use it at least once a month, I have all of my software installers and important coding projects stored on an external harddrive. It makes my computer run very fast, all of the time. I tell people to fdisk on here a lot because, like you said, people don't give enough detail to where you can actually figure out the problem, so the easiest way is to fdisk; everytime I tell someone they should fdisk I also tell them to backup their data because some people don't. Just my personal opinion =)

Your "extra detail" is somewhat rambling and I can't quite understand exactly what it is you are saying.

As to FORMATTING your hard drive, it is the only way to actually erase all the data on the drive and start over as if it were a new drive. I can think of 2 situations in which you would want to do that:

1) If there is sensitive information stored on the drive, and you are about to transfer the computer to someone else; OR

2) If your computer has taken a major dump, and the only way to restore it to functionality is to re-format the drive and re-load all your software.

And, yes--formatting the disk drive is a drastic measure which should only be undertaken by someone who is knowledgeable, and only as a last resort. As always, it is imperative that you have adequate backup, on CD's or floppy disks, from which to restore all software and data, because absolutely everything on the hard drive will be lost.

Sometimes when problems build up with a computer, the best way to get rid of them is to start fresh with a reformatted drive. Microsoft even says that Windows needs to be reinstalled about once every 2 years, which is a rather sad statement about its efficiency as an operating system. But really, many problems are simply unsolvable with minor tweaks to the system.

i think it's pretty sad how some people give wrong information. Not just wrong, but purposeful wrong to ruin someone's computer. I try my best to give the best information i can, and often read others answer to try not to repeat anything. Also, I'll try to make it know to the person asking that so and so is wrong and that they shouldn't follow their direction. It's part of this forum i suppose.
