Just go to the properties of your hard-drive and and run scandisk from there. If it says it need exclusive access and run scan disk on next start up say yes, and the restart your computer.
Don't format it, you will lose all your data! People shouldn't keep telling people to do that. Formatting isn't going to fix every computer problem there is, people sometimes think they know what they are doing and they don't,I have had a computer since 1985, tape drive. Check disk is an older statement for scandisk, that's all. It depends on what OS you are running, 98 or XP, 95, 3.1? I don't know any other languages, like unix or mac, but I am assuming you have windows based operating system.

You have files on your compuers hard drive which are like books in a library. A librarian arranges those books and makes index cards to keep track of them. If one of those books in being indexed and it moves, the index card has to be updated. If another book goes into that spot then the index card will have "cross-linked" data. If the book OR the index card just come up missing or have "cross-linked" data then you have corruption. Your hard drive has files, not books. CHKDSK or checkdisk fixes this information. I would run checkdisk in safe mode but it isn't a must. Just makes if faster. If you have Windows XP, you can open My Computer, and RIGHT click on the "C" drive icon and choose properties, tools, checkdisk. It has options which tell you what to do. It wouldn't hurt to do a DEFRAG too (found in that same area).

Checkdisk is a utility run within Windows that looks for bad sectors on the hard disk. It is better explained here:

There's no such command built into windows (I checked), so I'm thinking that this might be a virus. I'm not positive though so don't quote me. You may want to run a PC optimizer like the one from http://www.ccleaner.com/ to optimize your computer and fix registry errors.
