Success is defined differently, depending on what game you are playing. Financial success as an investor is different from entrepreneurial success as someone who creates a new business and creates new jobs.
Academic success is different from romantic success, where you find true love and experience intimacy and life-long affection.
Yet, no matter what game you choose to play, there are only two options, and a person must CHOOSE one of these two options.
1. Understand the game you are playing, master all the rules of the game, and play in a premeditated manner according to those rules.
2. Neglect to learn the rules, neglect to master them, and neglect to play in a premeditated manner according to the rules.
If you look at all the successful people, you will realize they ALL became masters of the rules of their game, and followed those rules religiously in order to rise in their field and become excellent at what they do.
Most people in life, sadly, are not successful in business, in their careers, in financial matters, even in love, because they choose option 2, which is easier (since you don't have to learn and master the rules of the game) and which leads to instant gratification but not to long-term success.
