Almost all religions or mythologies have predictions of the end times. Most of them are interpreted as the end comming soon. So join this church or that cult while you still have a chance to save yourself. At least that's what they say.
If you take the time to do a little research, you will see that a lot of philisophies, mostly ancient, from different parts of the world are pointing toward the same moment in time. It is quite possible that some of our world's leaders have already figured this out and are acting in their short term interest rather than for the future of this planet.
The date many of them are worried about is Dec. 22, 2012. This date is the LAST day of the Mayan long - count calendar. The end. The most accurate astronomical calendar humans have ever used, even more accurate than our own, runs out on this date.
Most of the people who are seriously studying this subject will say that it means not the complete destruction of the earth, but that there will be a radical change of some type that humanity will suffer through. The effects of global warming perhaps? A new ice age, maybe?
Google the date and you will find more information than you will ever be able to read before this end date comes.

Pretty clearly, humanity is "hell bent" (I use that phrase jokingly) on destroying itself. It will be interesting to see what traits turn out to be survival traits. Will it be cooperation or ruthlessness for example?
That said, probably some people will survive the next big crisis in one form or another. The world will, however, end when the sun engulfs it several billion years from now. If we somehow get past all the stupidity and religious garbage and manage to develop a rational and sustainable culture, perhaps we will manage to send some of our genes to some other planet out there and humankind will even survive the destruction of our planet.

We'll probably doom ourselves off before that planet killing asteroid hits us, before the consequences of global warming are in full swing, before the super volcanoes erupts and surely before our sun supernovas.
The detonation of tens of thousands of nuclear weapons that now sit quietly, inconspicuously, in missile silos, submarines and long-range bombers, faithful servants awaiting orders would bring the end of the human species.
The World Health Organization concludes that 1.1 billion people would be killed outright in such a nuclear war, mainly in the US, Russia, Europe, China and Japan. An additional 1.1 billion people would suffer serious injurles and radiation sickness. This would represent by far the greatest disaster in the history of the human species and, with no other adverse effects, would probably be enough to reduce at least the Northern Hemisphere to a state of prolonged agony and barbarism.
The nuclear winter that Carl Sagan spoke about would eventually spread to the Southern Hemisphere, killing all plant and animal life, and eventually mankind.
Are nukes good, the MAD doctrine kept us out of a nuclear war for 60 years, but now with rogue states and rogue leaders, the fallacy of the MAD doctrine is apparent. The weapons of peace for the last 60 years have now been turned to weapons of war. Once again we are staring into the black abyss of a nuclear holocaust.

The Bible says when the gospel of Jesus has reached the 4 corners of the earth. First will come the rapture or the great tribulation and then the armies of Armegeddon will fight each other for the last battle of survival. This will take place in the middle east, probably Iran.

Soon... The US borrows $957 million per day since September 29, 2006... we owe 8 trillion dollars... most of the money we borrow comes from China... how long till China says, "Enough"... economic collapse. What then. A revolution- thats what... From there there's so many ways to go out from there, but I'd guess we'll blow ourselves up.

The world won't actually end, but humanity isn't too far from wiping itself off the map.
When? Soon. How? I figure that one day, some third-world country will push the USA too far and we'll all be dancing under beautiful mushroom clouds.
