There is no exact meaning for this word in English. You can only assign certain loose equivalents in English, depending on the context of the word in the original Tagalog sentence. It could imply a sign of regret. For example consider this sentence: "Sayang, natalo ako". In English: "It's unfortunate that I lost". It could also imply wastage. For example: "Sayang lang ang pera". In English: "It's just a waste of money". These are just a couple of examples I can offer.
There are many peculiarities in the Tagalog language that makes literal translations to English very difficult. Your question is just one of them.
I can speak Thai language as well. It's even worse to translate Thai to English. There are hundreds of Thai words that don't have any English equivalent whatsoever. Translating just one Thai word might require a whole paragraph in English.

"sayang" is an expression of regret. Depending on the context, it is roughly equivelent to saying "what a pity;" "that's too bad;" "what a shame;" " what a waste;"
If I say, "Sayang ang pera mo dyan"
I mean, "that's a waste of your money."
If I say, "Sayang - muntik na ako manalo"
I mean, "What a pity - I nearly won"
Hope this helps
