Yes, too much of anything can destroy a person's life and cause those around them that love them to suffer as well.
"what does it tell about their personality?"
Gamblers(which is a label) are given another label called addiction. Society has been brainwashed into thinking "once a____always a _____ " by______. You fill in the blanks.
If an individual doesn't want to quit they aren't going to. What is the peer system like around this individual - strong or weak? Yes, it's possible to quit and for good...something could be bothering your loved one and this is how they are dealing with it but don't ever believe that it is not a personal choice or that this person has an excuse.
Or, have they turned away from the behavior and the person's peers have yet to get over the fear of having to return to the pain again? Fear of something happening that isn't is Satan knocking at ones door...Satan can be ignored by _______. You fill in the blank.

Well, that is a question which can be expanded to:
"Can any addiction be cured?" And the answer to that is:
"That depends on the person, the addicion, the circumstances of that person's life, his support system, et al..."
At the present time, we simply don't know enough about the biological causes of addicion to "cure" a person's addictive behavior, at best we can treat the symptoms and provide the tools necessary for that person to function successfully in society. One of those tools is the knowledge that the person MUST fear a relape into his previous addiction, and must accordingly take steps to prevent this.
As far as "Does gambling destroy someone's life?", well any addiction, uncontrolled, can destroy. Bibliomania, for example, is "An exaggerated preoccupation with the acquisition and ownership of books." This can range in severity from the excentric but functional friend you have that has shelves of books all over his home, to the person who lives in filth, surrounded by 7 ft piles of books, who steals rare books from libraries, and who dies when he's buried by a collapse of books. Same thing for chocoholics, alcoholics, drug addicts (think Keith Richards vs. a street junkie), cocaine addicts, every addiction. It is a scale, not a
either/or situation.
What it tells about their personaltiy is a matter of debate and perspecitve. It does show a certain weakness, but is that weakness endemic to the addict, or does it lurk in all of us, simply waiting for the right set of circumstances and pressures to pop out and bite us?

It can destroy his life. It will always be a temptation he has to fight. He can't just gamble a little bit. It IS possible to quit for good, but a group like Gamblers Anonymous might really help support him.

Investing in Stocks and Bonds is gambling, and many successful people do that. Although not a risky as betting on sports events or cards, dice, etc. it is still a risk. So is real estate investing for that matter.

Yes it can destroy their lives. It can leave them destitute. I think a lot of them have an underlying problem is why they become this way. Maybe they feel that a big win would somehow make everything come right for them.
