genius I don't no but he had some very good idea's about how to built a tank because he was one of the people that developed the merkava witch is one of the top MBT of the moment.
On the other side he stood in for the organization of the armourd forces after the Suez crisis and he produced a upgrade of the blitzkrieg of the Germans but he forgot the infantry in the plan witch had his drawbacks in the next war

The opinions vary. I have read about an officer who tried to write about Talik and his conduct during Yom Kipur war but was silenced by Sharon who was at that time (during Begin's prime-ministership) Minister of Defence and afriend of Tal. So I am not sure you can talk about him as a genius or not, but he definitely has his good points (the tank) and his bad points (conduct during the war).
