Real fusion research is not so entertaining but, yes, such a thing is possible and billions of dollars have been spent trying to achieve if. The depiction in SM2 was a wonderfully entertaining and fanciful depiction of fusion research, and it's clear the writer did some homework since some specific aspects of Doc Oc's reactor where based on real fusion experiments: Fusion energy research does involve containing a super-hot plasma by magnetic field. Containing the plasma is difficult to achieve since plasmas so contained tend to become unstable. Rapidly changing the magnetic field to counter instability growth (the original purpose of DO's arms) is often necessary. Tritium is necessary for a fusion reactor, and is a rare highly regulated nuclear material (since it is also very dangerous if released into the air).

Other aspects are pure fiction. Most notable, the reactor cannot explode and destroy a city and, even with computer assist, human reaction times are much to slow to counter the instabilities.

Yes and No

For example, Fusion has already been sustained by labortories all around the world. The Tokamak is a plasma machine built to sustain fusion. Closer to my home, at Lawerence Livermore Lab within the Iginitions facility has created fusion by aiming extremely powerful lasers at a gold tube filled with hydrogen isotopes like trinium. And as you know, hydrogen bombs are basically a fusion reaction.

But the problem is, the fusion reaction only lasts about a billionth of a second. Not nearly as long as in the movie Spiderman II. Fusion has not been a successful energy source because it takes more energy to get it started than the total energy it puts out.

Practically Fusion Reaction requires a very high temprature and pressure which is not possible to be created in such a small aparatus or machine(What ever you like to say).
Only one experimentel fusion reactor is preasent in the world in U.S which have its main reactor inside a 300mts*200mts*100mts(approx) water reservoir and it could generate power for only 0.7 mili sec and and in this time nearly 70% of the water dries up.
The reactor consist of two discs mounted on a pole with elastic threads of titanium which forms a cage like structure and inside it two sub atomic particals are placed which are then fused by moving the plates horizontally producing very high temp and pressure.
Hope this information will help you the best.

Extremely simple...fusion requires A LOT of mass, and the gravitational force causes fusion reaction to start up. Take into account the mass of jupiter and it doesn't ignite. There are other factors, but yeah.

The only way to do it is to get a lot of hydrogen and push it all together somewhere in space. And i mean a ALOT.

unlike the fission reaction which can be controlled by absorbing excess neutrons(uranium) the fusion reaction is uncontrolled and hence there is every possibility of an explosion rather than steady energy generation
this is the reason fusion reaction is used to make a hydrogen bomb!!!

not yet But it's sure that the scientist will develop a technology to do that for useful purposes. by fusion of hydrogen s large amount of electricity can be obtained so that 1 gram of hydrogen's fusion can generate electricity that can give electricity to whole world for 85 hours . it can prevent energy crises too.

NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A fusion reaction must be conducted in a underground and we cant actually see the reaction as it wold blind a human eye.

good question though!

Till now we have failed to have CONTROLLED FUSSION REACTION. It has been done but the energy is so much released that it can't b controlled........
