M = 1000
C = 100

Looking at the position of the first three letters MCM and their meaning.
First M = 1000
Second and third CM = -100 + 1000 = 900
Because the C is to the left of a letter with a higher numerical value, it is subtracted.

The rest is straight forward.

MCMLXXXVII = 1987

I guess you know that they are supposed to be in descending order except that you can put one lower value before a higher one to subtract it. To write 4 would be IV and 444 would be CDXLIV.

M is Mill, which is 1,000
C is Cent, which is 100.
L is 50
X is 10
V is 5
I is 1

So MCM is 1900 (1,000 plus another 1,000 from which 100 is subtracted), LXXX is 80, VII is 7: 1987.
