Sounds like they know they're going to hurt you, but they don't want to.

It means that they are not what you need or what they need so therefore they can not stay with you because you deserve someone who will love you the way you deserve to be loved. This person may have problems or have another interest, other than you. So be glad and see what happens. If they leave and love you they might return. In the mean time new doors will open for you and you may feel that it was the right choice. You deserve the best.

Yes, it means all of the above answers. It depends on the type of person who said it. It either means he's trying to get out without hurting you too badly or he really cares about you but knows he isn't what you need.

That they love/like you enough to know that you are not what they are looking for in a long term commitment. They are trying to be gentle with you, because they do care what happens to you, but they no longer want to be with you, as in a relationship.
Love hurts! So Sorry!!

I was married for almost 20 years before my husband passed away, but at the beginning of our relationsip, I would always tell him to do me the favor of letting me know if he found someone else he would rather be with. I told him I would never want to be with someone who didn't want to be with me. I told him him that I loved him so much that his happiness was more important to me than my own. What I meant by that was that I truly loved him, but I would never try to force him to stay somewhere or with someone he didn't want to be with if he would be happier somewhere else. I have heard other people make that statement when they wanted out of a relationship, but didn't want to admit that they had already met someone else they were interested in. So I guess that statement means different things to different people. If someone were to say that to me, I would certainly ask a few questions, such as, "If you really love me so much, why do you want to let me go?", or simply, " Is there someone else you would rather be with?"

It is true love.
It is when I want what is best for another person, even when it costs me personally for them to have it.
Like with my ex-husband, I knew in the long run he would find a woman better able to give him what he wanted and needed, so I let him go.
With another man, I was able to truly being happy for him when he fell in love with another woman.
Hope this helps.

It means that their love for you is important to them but because you may want to go sow your oats or you've grown apart they want you to know that they will not bother you or try to hinder you into keeping them. They would rather let you go and hope that you two will find your way back to each other or you both can move on without guilt of the break up.

It means that they really care about you, and must let you go so you can both move on. It also means that by doing this they really don't want to hurt you, it's a tough choice.

It means they hope you do go so they can get laid by someone else, at least that's what I've seen and witnessed.
