I think that any kind of "checking" from the employers side needs to be official; like "fill out this survey" type of thing or take a test or they check with authorities and references to learn about you. If personal information is to be taken from the Internet or rumors, it gets too easy to twist and make bad info about someone..

Just as you are allowed to research a company on the Web, prospective employers are allowed to research your background on the Web. I know our company's HR guy has mentioned visiting some MySpace profiles.

If you are doing a job search, I'd suggest making your MySpace profile is squeaky clean or setting it to private to block its contents from non-friends.

Yes. You put your personal page on a public site. You opened yourself up to the world. Employers have an obligation to find out everything they legally can about prospective hires. If you don't want your employer viewing your public page, don't have a personal public page.

Why not? What are you trying to hide?

See the logic? I would never do what you kids do with that Myspace crap. A stalkers heaven, and a chilling example of the control of free speach.

It is not right. Work is not home and home is not work. It's not their business. Does your potential boss masturbate to Laurel and Hardy? That has nothing to do with your job.

Its public record... so I'd say keep off my space if you don't want to be found. Or don't post obscene material that may not be appropriate.

It's public and their is no law against it. They just have to be careful so you don't find out that is the reason they didn't hire you.
