I sympathize with your desire to end the war and bring the soldiers involved home, but at the same time, most people who talk about this being a war over oil are still pumping gas into their cars, using petroleum products, and otherwise reaping the benefits of keeping an oil supply.

Not that invading Iraq has actually worked out to provide more oil to the world (actually production is still lower than when Saddam was in power), but all the same, if we find fault with fighting for oil it may be time to actually change our lifestyles and reduce our demand for it.

The new plan is for a surge of 30000 more troops with maximum troop strength to stay in Iraq for at least 18 months. It will also include some economic aid with the thought that lowering the unemployment rate (it's around 70%) will calm some of the insurgents. But the main part of the new plan will be a large and long lasting increase in troops. See below.

They're not.

There will be a US military presence in Iraq for decades to come.

In a nut-shell if you or your children sign up for the army in the next 15 - 20 years, chances are they will standing in Iraqi sand for at least part of their stint.
