The best way to budget is to research all the places you want to go and how much the places that you wanted to stay cost. Plus what things you want to do when you get there. Back in 97 I went with about $1700 for one month and I also went skiing when I was there. I also spent a lot of time in Eastern Europe. I don't know why that guy is worried about Eastern Europe. I know lots of people who have been to Romania and loved it. The Hostel is make believe. That said, always be careful and try not to look like a dumb tourist.
I usually don't carry cash when I travel. I have a bank card and a visa that do me just fine. Make sure you bank card has a 4 digit pin and is a checking account or a visa or mastercard and make sure you have the Plus sign or cirus on the back and use the corresponding machines. If you must take cash then take travelers checks.

I would recommend that you check out the website- www.raileurope.com. There are some great tips on the site and this is the place where travel agents go to purchase your tickets. I have backpacked in Europe and recommend deciding up front how many places you want to visit and how many days you will travel. Then purchase a rail ticket (first class is the way to go and does not cost that much more) with a berth. Plan to sleep on the train at night while you travel and wake up each morning in a new city. You can shower in the train stations (it is clean and safe to do so in Europe, though you get nickle and dimed with having to purchase towels, etc). I would recommend taking a VISA debit or credit card and just make sure it is on the PLUS network or that you are able to use it in ATM's worldwide (most are). You can pull out local money at ATM machines in each city with the different currency this way. It can be quite expensive to eat at a restaurant (usually $50-100 in Northern Europe- a little less in Eastern Europe) and hotels are probably at least $150 per night. Another thing to consider... if you are staying overnight in Belgium, they have a 7 star hotel system (not 5), so a 3 star hotel is a FLEABAG. I was able to sleep on the train almost every night and then I slept in hotels the other nights. I have friends who have stayed at hostels successfully, but you do have to make sure that you are careful; there are people who would steal from you. If you want to find some good tips on saving money, you can check out the book Europe on a Shoestring. Have a wonderful trip!

wel the question u r asking is really broad... i stayed in europe for about 3 months n i took around $7000. u need to think about where u want to stay and where u want to visit and such. Just make sure u keep ur stuff with you real well. i got my camera stolen in a train a couple years back and it's a really safe idea to travel in groups. places like romania and a couple other countries aren't too pleasant n there are lots of tourist kidnappings

That question depends on so many variables-you did not provide enough information-it depends on where you go, when you go, how long you go-specifics will alter the amount of money you need.
