50 years ago there was a national identity, there was a nation to be proud over. A nation that could stand up for itself and which acted largely in a manner that would assure its national interests came first, instead of the inevitable decline into policing the world. We've lost our morality, our sense of purpose, our shared dreams and aspirations as a nation. Hell, america is even losing the European identity that defined it for its first 200 years of existence and to say thats something that will prove to be detrimental to national character is something racist and...facist?! Jesus christ do people even know what that word means when they throw it around... We elect presidents whom serve corporate interests over our own, who suspend our basic freedoms in the form of habeas corpus, and who believe that they are the idealogical roadmap for every country that isn't our own. So, is America dead?

I know the sleeping giant quote well, but again, that was a totally different nation back then. Hell it had factories and everything, ha. I doubt we could get our **** together like that anymore, use our current wars as proof perhaps?

America is dying because of corporate capitalism.
This not a rant against capitalism in general but the very specific type involving publicly traded corps. It's all about increasing share price.
Our nation is devoted to increasing the shareholder value (a term that came about in the Reagan years) of nameless, faceless corporatins, many of them foreign.
We don't care about education, we don't care about infrastructure, we are sending all our good jobs overseas and becoming a nation of paper shufflers. The Head of Goldman Sachs got a 54.3 mil bonus. And guess what? He didn't produce anythihng pf value. The guy at your local deli contributed more value to the economy than that.

If you look at history, you will see periods in most countries histories where they are controlled by corporations. This is part of the reason the founding fathers made it so hard to create and keep a corportation.
Following the logic that history repeats itself, I think we will see the people begin to get upset at said corproations. We are seeing this with Wal-Mart. Many people still shop there, but they are starting to see profit losses and actually had to pull out of there first foriegn market this year. The simple fact of the matter is that people get complacent when life is easy, but as it starts to take a downward spiral, we will see more and more peope stand up and say that this is not what we stand for. Leaders will rise that stand for the people again and we will return to the glory that was once ours. Right now however, we are heading towards the really rough waters and all we can do is hang on and hope we don't get washed overboard.

You must not have listened much in History class. 50 years ago Americans did not have nearly the civil rights they have now. 50 years ago we just finished a war in Korea that killed 10 times as many soldiers as the present war and we were only a few years from jumping into another one in Vietnam that killed more. And in those days your butt would have been drafted. If you complained about the war then you would have been on the FBI's watch list, and they didn't need to get warrants in those days and when they did all they had to do was ask. Habeas Corpus most officers didn't even know what that was back then. Give a cop a problem or even talk back and you probably got a busted jaw, and all that was said is next time you would learn to keep your mouth shut.
As for our identity, this country was formed by people wanting to break away from European Ideals. They came to America to get away from Europe. Not to identify with them.

Given your answer, yes. America suffers from a lack of leadership. Too many countries look to America for answers. After the fall of the USSR, America is the only big kid on the block. The leaders we have had since then have not been able to project the confidence that the world is looking for. For heaven's sake we have the greatest military in the world and guerillas in broke down Toyotas wearing sheets are giving us a hard time. Americans have become lazy and complacent. Countries like China are taking advantage of this and are putting their resources into exceeding the US in GDP. Americans need to get their rears off the couches made in Malaysia and go out and work. Also exercise the rights that men died for and vote.

Why don't you get into politics then? Have you heard the old saying "You can preach a better sermon with your life than with your words?" You're just some overly-opinionated hot-headed loser sitting at his computer desk typing, typing, typing. Why don't you try doing something positive to contribute to correcting the perceived wrongs?
NO, America is not dead... despite the fact that so many ungrateful bastards live here and take advantage of her freedoms.
Don't you love how you can TYPE or SAY whatever your ungrateful little heart desires... without having to fear some corrupt regime or militia breaking down the doors of your home and slitting your throat? God bless America with her freedoms! Where you can sit in your home, warm and safe, while men and women fight so that you can continue to sit on your *** and say whatever pleases you.

Almost every major country has seen big changes in the last 50 years. Europe is not what it was 50 years ago. Asia is not what it was 50 years ago. It's not just America. It's a worldwide phenomenon. Look at changes in transportation, communication, the internet, international trade. Globalization naturally changes national identities. I think people should focus on preserving CULTURAL identities through education and family upbringing.

I believe America is dead. And I agree with what you said. Maybe we will be revived once this dumba** of a president gets the hell out of office.
I am currently reading a book called Worse Than Watergate, The Secret Presidency of George W. Bush by John W. Dean, You may be interested in it if you feel our lovely President is not fulfilling his promise to America.

I agree with u..
but i can't say America is responsible, neither r it's people.. who is responsible is the government, it's stupid policies (that puts itself before the people) and the media who is controlling the nation..
I hope America goes back to what it used to be and not continue in this deadly road..

sounds like you need a vacation away from this country.
let me tell you
I moved to Europe for 3 yrs and it was the best thing that ever happened to me. You get to see other cultures and how they feel about america and americans. being the super power isnt exactly a great place to be. this country has more problems than most americans know about. be wise and know what your government deals out. you might be real surprised!
