COHESION is a state or situation in which all the parts or ideas fit together well so that they form a united whole. Synonym : cohesiveness, coherence Example : There was no cohesion in their performance. The lack of cohesion within the party lost them votes at election time.

COHERENCE has two specific meanings/usages. (1) The quality that something has when it makes sense or is pleasing because all the parts or steps fit together well and logically Synonym : unity Antonym : incoherence Example : The stage sets were brilliant and they gave coherence to a piece which was bitty in the second half. The points you make are fine, but the whole essay lacks coherence. (2) A state or situation in which all the parts or ideas fit together so well so that they form a united whole. Synonym cohesion, cohesiveness Antonym : incoherence Example : His arrival threatened the coherence of the group. France's entry enhanced the coherence of the alliance.

Cohesion is the term used when two like substances/material stick together (example ionic compounds to another ionic compound)..It is a natural process of two materials sticking together.. The opposite of this is adhesion(unlike materials stick together artificially by using adhesives like glue)..

On the other hand, coherence is how understandable something is and how it is arranged in a logical way.. (A thing where coherence is very important is an essay..An essay should be understood thus what is written in it should be arranged in a way so that it will not be confusing once read.)

According to my dictionary, they are interchangeable (the state of cohering or sticking together) but 'cohesion' is used in reference to botany and physics. But of course, my dictionary isn't exactly perfect.

Oh and also, 'coherence' can mean the logical and orderly and consistent relation of something while 'cohesion' cannot.

EXAMPLES:
Cohesion caused by glue caused the picture to stick to the wall. (can substitute 'coherence' for 'cohesion')
She spoke with little coherence as the alcohol took effect. (you canNOT substitute 'cohesion' into this sentence)
