My mom dumped off her fish on me so now my tank is in deep trouble. So now my 20 gallon high tank is in deep trouble. My stock before was:

2 german ram cichlids
2 south american bumblebee catfish
5 guppies(2 male 3 female)
1 bulldog pleco
1 mystery snail

Now that my mom dumped her fish on me, I have:
2 german ram cichlids
2 south american bumblebee catfish
7 guppies(4 male 3 female)
1 bulldog pleco
1 mystery snail
4 cherry barbs

I know my tank is incredibly overstocked because I was on the border between overstocked and not overstocked before, now I am basically screwed. I have the tank overfiltered and I have a jungle of plants so ammonia, nitrite, nitrates are not a problem. I am worried because having soo many fish in such a small space IS going to cause stress, and I can not get anymore tanks. So does anybody have any ideas on how I can improve the situation?

Sigh... I already said I can't get another tank. Sharing would be good. So far I have not found anyone who wants them. They have fin rot so my chances of giving them away are slim. Once I cure that and get them healed it should be no problem, but that will take a while.

Oh yea, Seahawks rule!!

Sometimes a pet store will agree to take fish as long as they are not to old, and show no signs of illness. Maybe phone around and see if that is an option. Also, if you know anyone with a tank, you could see if they may be interested in taking a fish or two off your hands.

If you are not willing to get another tank, there aren't very many options except trying to pawn them off on others who are equiped to keep them.

Call up aquarium stores in your area. Not Petco or Petsmart, they don't accept fish from local sourses (another reason, among many, not to shop there).
Tell them your dilemma and ask if they can buy some of the fish off of you for store credit. You probably won't get retail prices, but it will solve your problems.
Put an ad on www.craigslist.com. In case you don't know, it's an online bulletin board. There is a pet section where people try to re-home pets.
Put an ad in the paper. Again, you won't get retail prices, but you will get the fish better homes.
Good luck to you and the fishies!

mutually as Aqadvisor is an extremely available device I consistently propose people to apply it with a grain of salt. So use your basic experience: you will possibly desire to upload your fish steadily besides, you will see once you have adequate fish on your tank ;) keep in mind that Endler's and Fancy guppies can crossbreed. mutually as some people think of hybrids are relaxing, some want keeping their bloodlines sparkling.

You might want to switch to a stronger filtration system and/or add an undergravel filter. And do more frequent water changes. If you can't bear to part with them that is. I don't think you're overstocked. These are all small fish. The UGF and the extra water changes should do the trick.

all i have to say is that a 2cm fish excluding the tail needs 200sq . a 23 litre tank with a large surface area will support 3-4 fish.

Hope that helps some how !!!!

go to your local pet store and ask about a buy-back program or maybe swap for a store credit
