Tell him your interested in making a little money on the side. Or you want to persue a career in photography.
If he doesn't like that, then just sneak about to do it.
I'd curl up and die if I didn't have a hobby. I love scrapbooking wich involves taking photo's and putting them into albums so my daughter and other family members can enjoy for decades to come.
If you get into scrapbooking, tell your husband it's to preserve the photo's of family and friends for life in an acid and linguin free inviroment.
This way you'll get to persue photography even more.

don't call it a hobby...call it something else like an interest or something ( I don't have my dicitonary handy)....I don't think sneaking behind his back with a 'hobby' is wise. you might use your 'hobby' to show him a better side to the world he knows, and how great some of the things he does and is interested in from the eyes of another person.
discouraging you from buying a camera is different from banning you from taking pictures...my opinion is that you go for it...I mean the camera was a gift

Loraine, I'm sorry to hear you are in a situation in your life where you can't choose your own fun.Don't let him destroy your interest, and spirit. Take pictures on your way to the grocery store. Take them after you drop the kids off at school. Put your mind to it and you will find the way,You must do this for your own self respect. I'll bet you'll be fabulous at it! I wish you my best. Invite me to your first professional showing.

Always take it with you, you never know when you might see something worthy of your time, and if your gone longer then expected you already said you were going to the store, who needs to know you stopped at the park first?

if photography pleases you, then you should do it. if your husband complains remind him that you support him in his interests and he should have the same respect for you. marriage is an equal partnership
you should not have to hide your photography like a thief

Easy and save money at the same time, don't put film in.
Take some pics of him (with film in) and lie like hell and tell him how good he looks.
