Is there a formula anywhere that'll tell me when the pack is full or is this the one place where WotC leaves it up to the player's common sense? For example, 1 tindertwig definately fits inside a backpack. If it doesn't exceed the character's max load, would 500 fit? 5000?

If there isn't a rule anywhere, that's fine, but it's driving me crazy that I can't find a definate answer anywhere in DMG/DMG2 or PHB

I believe that this is left open to interpretation. The rules can't cover everything, and this is something that wasn't covered.
If you go to the Wizards of the Coast site, they have a Dungeons and Dragons message board. I know that someone there once did some work on figuring out how much a given container could carry.

I haven't played DnD in a while cuz I think the system is poo. I do, however, remember all the containers having an amt of weight that they could carry. So if tindertwig weighs 2 ozs and you can carry 60lbs in a backpack (that sounds familiar) you can carry a lot of tindertwigs. Basically... everything's done by weight.
