Hmmm.... I guess you can say it depends.... However, that is not helpful to you, so allow me to elaborate since there are MANY colors that are wonderful for a dress in the winter.

Lets start with the basics. There are two major types of dresses that one would wear during the winter season: evening gowns and everyday dresses. Both types of dresses should be in thick materials like velvet or thicker silks and satins (to keep the wearer warm of course ;) and to create the appearance that one is warm in the winter even when one is not!) That means no charmeuse or chiffon! Also, one should generally wear darker colors to give off the appearance of visual and artistic weight (don't ask...). Evening dresses should be full length and covering ones thighs and calves all the way to the floor. Everyday dresses should at least come to the knee. Long-sleeve or short-sleeve doesn't matter.

BLACK: The chic and sophisticated standard. The wonderful thing about black in the winter is that it is a complete contrast against the white snow and also black is a "warmer" looking color because it is darker thus evoking a sense of coziness. Another plus to wearing this color is that stains won't show up on this color as well as other colors.

WHITE: The next obvious choice. A woman wearing a white dress in comparison to the white snow makes an elegant and ethereal statement. White is, of course, the color of elegance, opulence, and pureness. However, my only beef with this color is that it gets dirty VERY easily.

RED: The ultimate statement. Because red is the color of passion and lust, you will be SMOKING if you wear this!! Also, since red is a very dominant color, the wearer will grab lots of attention wearing this color. An important note though: the faint-hearted CANNOT wear this color. Red is bold and makes a statement, so if you can't handle it, ditch it!

MAROON/PURPLE: The very stately and mature shade of red. It brings forth images of royalty. Translation: you will look like you are a very respectful person of privilege and class. Wear this color to subtly demand respect and attention wherever you go.

BROWN: A cozy, homely color. A very pleasant and comforting color to look at. If you want to give off the impression that you are approachable and friendly, this is the color for you! Although it is a very subdued, neutral color, your inner brightness will gorgeously shine through in a brown dress.

BLUE: A serene, calm color. Blue is a relaxing color and it may actually even relax the tensions of others around you. It is a color that gets people to open up. During the Egyptian empire, lapis lazuli (a stone that ranged from deep blue to azure) was actually a gem reserved only for royalty. Blue is also one of those colors that subtly demands respect wherever the wearer goes.

GREEN: An empowered hue very reminiscent of nature. Green brings forth images of vines, forests, and foliage. Therefore, a person wearing this color is perceived as honest, down to earth, and very true to her own morals/values. Wearing a green dress may also invoke a sense of mysteriousness. The wearer gives off a come-and-catch-me-if-you-can message.

BASICALLY: If you are in a rush, pick black because you can never go wrong. White would be (I think) the hardest to pull off and maintain due to its high maintenance factor.

Chocolate brown, black or some warmer colors perhaps a deep crimson red or purple. Personally, I would go with earthy tones/colors no patterns or a red.

traditionally iciness hues are the darkest and maximum jewel-like (black, charcoal, gray, browns, olives, lodens, army, burgundy, etc ) whilst summer season is the ideal pastel season (dwindled purple, butter yellow, infant blue, easy mint, crisp white, and so on) lower back, Fall and Spring are the transitional months with hues leaning in direction of the season being approached. Fall is in lots of cases crammed with rusts, olives, camels, beige, easy browns etc whilst Spring is roses, aquas, beige, easy blues etc.

I would say black or gold. The color gold in a dress is very in style during this winter.
