Siddhartha was a brilliant book about the life of Siddhartha Guatama, "the buddah" via an interesting day-by-day approach. and Hesse is such a gorgeous writer. Although I wouldn't necessarily dub it as "life changing" simply because you will only enjoy the book if you are interested in a) eastern philosophy and b) spirituality. I think that the spirituality itself is what changes your life, the book is just an affirmation of one's already channeled understanding of divinity.

What is also important about Siddhartha as for the Prophet of Khalil Gibran, is that both books are compact...
The writers have obviously thought them well of.
And both are said to be life changing...
Not in my case as I had already been on that "path" of thoughts for a while...
I read all the books of Herman Hesse and it is certainly the best...
And yes it is said to be the life of Buddha...
Somehow it reminds me of Parsifal from Wolfgram Von Eschenbach too...
Over-protected childhood confronted all at once with the outside world...
Would it happen to you, would that not be a shock?
Then it takes the talent of the writer to make you move in the steps of his hero...
Don't forget to take a step down as always when people push you into reading a book, I would say:wait until you can't stand the urge any more!
Even so! Human nature is made in a way we somehow like to contradict our pairs...

I haven't read the book, but Siddhartha did change my life. I use to think that I wasn't living life the right way. I was so unhappy. I thought life was suppose to be like those Precious Moments' quotes. (Love Is Kind, Life Is Wonderful) I felt awful because I wasn't living up to those quotes and then I heard a quote from Buddha which is "All of life is suffering." All of a sudden everything clicked and life made sense. Life isn't easy and that's okay. I could relax because I wasn't doing anything wrong. Life's hard and it is what it is.

I haven't personally read it, but i do know loads abt him.As a matter of fact, I am a Hinduism student and buddhism is a part of my syllabus. Since background info is needed in whatever study one undertakes, I went into extensive digging on his life. That info was definitely interesting and this is what must be written in the book u're refering to. I intend to get hold of it as soon as possible, u might as well do the same. I should say that his story has sure changed the pattern of my life.Buddha's doctrine rests on the 4 Noble Truths, of which the first is that life is full of suffering, the root cause being our ignorance and thirst for material pleasures, which keep us in the cycle of birth and death. Since learning abt this,I try to complain less in daily life. I do know that he has had a great influence on my life. However, the change is very subtle and not in the least disruptive. Well, the summary of all that I've written is that u shud definitely read the book.

I had to read it for a college English class. It was kinda interesting, had a lot of Buddhist / Hindu - ish ideology, which made it interesting but not "life changing" or anything like that. I don't read to much, and to me this book was just one more story. Nothing more.

I read it. Its about the only literature I have read about Buddhism. I wouldn't say it changed my life, but I think the perspective it gave me on a religion, time, and culture I previously knew nothing about was very valuable.

It was BORING! It changed my life only because of the time wasted that I could have been doing something better. Like reading the bible.
