Here in the Netherlands, most indoor school gyms don't allow shoes. We weren't allowed shoes indoors in gradeschool or in high school, so yes I went barefoot all the time. And you know what? I never had athlete's foot, never had a wart, don't know any classmates who did either. People in the US think it's so unhygienic but if it were so bad as many people think to judge from some of the reactions here & on other forums, then Dutch kids should all have foot fungus constantly... but they don't.
Actually wearing sneakers can be worse, if you put your foot down even for a brief while on the ground while changing *and then put it in a closed shoe*, that is also moist & warm because you're transpiring from exercise, then you're providing an excellent environment for any bacteria you may've picked up to grow... even those with only high school biology will remember that fungi & bacteria love warm, dark & damp environments, while they don't grow near as well or often even die in a well-ventilated, light and dry place. There may be bacteria on the skin of a bare foot but they don't multiply, the infection doesn't catch hold.

Sure! My friends and I used to go to a gym that had a basketball court above the pool, so it was pretty common for us to play a game of b-ball wearing nothing but our bathing trunks, then shower and hit the pool. Made it a whole lot easier than going down to the lockers and changing. Also, at school, if you forgot to bring sneakers to gym, you were required to go barefoot, especially if there was gym related test that day.

Ew no! Do you realize how dirty the gym floor is?! Gum, sweat, dirt, pizza sauce, you honestly don't want to know what else there could be.
Plus why would I take off my boots plus two pairs of socks?

Yes... many times... dances (when heals become unbearable), Grad Night (when we all end up somewhat naked), and of course at those sleep overs when you spend the night in a jump house and wake up surrounded by half-naked people... good times, good times...
