Since the nation today is more divided than it normally is you can start to find a difference between the two parties, but overall there is no major difference between the two. This is proven by the recent midterm elections. If the Democrats and Republicans were 2 hardware stores in the same community they would set up shop right next to each other in the middle of the community in order to maximize the amount of traffic coming into their stores. Now, instead, relate this to political ideology. The Democrats and Republicans set up shop right next to each other on the political spectrum right in the middle. This way the Republicans get half of all the traffic which is the rightward leaning half and the Democrats get the other half of all the traffic which is the leftward leaning half. However, ever since Bush became president he decided to pick up his shop and start moving it farther to the right for some reason so he's beginning to lose some business which is why the Democrats have taken control of Congress. Otherwise, the two parties are pretty similar.

Republicans have traditional, conservative views while Democrats prefer more progressive and liberal viewpoints. The two parties have different views on almost every facet of human existance. Everything from the economy to national defense to death and taxes. Both sides genuinely want the best for the nation, but each believes the other side is wrong. A good example of this difference is poverty. Republicans and Democrats alike want to see poverty eradicated from our society. Republicans want private organizations to handle the lion's share of this with government assistance. Democrats want to use government funds (taxpayer money) to achieve the same goal. Republicans believe tax cuts stimulate the economy and Democrats prefer to raise taxes to generate more revenue. Almost any subject you can think of has a Republican and a Democrat point of view. It would take too long to describe them all. Democrats are more likely to be urban people and Republicans are more rural. If you recall the last presidential election, most of the blue states (states that voted Democrat) had large urban centers. California, Illinois, New York, Pennsylvania all were blue states and they all have big cities. All the largest cities(L.A., Chicago, NYC) voted Democrat.

obviously, besides being different political parties, i believe its

hard to quantify objectively, but i will try. knowing what the

party stands for during presidential/congressioal elections may

help some in knowing whether you wish to vote democrat or

repulblican. for example, democrats, traditionally, supports

abortion, handouts to about anyone to justify government

existence, free or govt assisted heatlhcare, etc. republicans

lean to less govt encroachment on people but generally

want a strong national defense, and support initiatives in

encouraging persons to better their lot, than to succumb to

poor me. i tend to be republican, so i hope its not too biased an

Republicans tend to more conservative (In their thinking) and cater to big business as a way to stimulate the economy. Democrats tend to be more liberal (In their thinking) and cater more to individuals people needs of the country, unfortunately they tend to raise taxes more than Republicans to pay for entitlement programs (welfare, social security, etc) HOWEVER, historically the economy of the country has been better during Democratic rule in government.

Not much really. Both are working for corporate interests. At least the Democrats sell themselves as helping the American people.

Republicans screw us over. Democrats screw us over less. Both screw us in the end.

Republicans think more government is the solution to social "problems". Democrats think more government is the solution to economic "problems". Overall, they think more government is going to fix every problem. Too bad it's the bloated government that's causing a lot of the problems in the first place..

The difference isn't in the party that's important but in the results of a thorough background history of affiliations proving the character one way or another.

Honestly, semantics. There are differences, but their ultimate goal is the same, and both parties work together to reach that goal.
