They say that it skips a generation, so if your fathers mother was the last to have twins, it would be your generation to have twins... there are 10 sets in my family, including my twin sons.

Do twins or more run in your family? Identical twinning is completely random and universal for all countries and ethnicities. The odds are 1 in 285. If one of your parents is an identical twin or if you (or your partner) is an identical twin, your odds are no higher for having twins than anyone else.
However, according to Barbara Luke, author of When You're Expecting Twins, Triplets, or Quads, "Some women are naturally prone to producing more than one egg during ovulation and are therefore more likely to give birth to FRATERNAL twins or supertwins. This tendency runs in families, and you can inherit the trait through either your mother's or father's side of the family." Dr. Luke adds that your male partner's family history has no influence on your chances for conceiving multiples; it's the mother's ovulation pattern that determines twinning. Your partner may be a twin himself, but that does not increase your chance of having twins.

You have an increased chances of conceiving multiples if:

you're over 35
you conceived in the first month after discontinuing birth control pills
you're African American
you've used assisted reproductive technology to conceive
you've already had several children
you have a previous set of FRATERNAL twins
you (the mother) is a FRATERNAL twin
In 2000, the Centers for Disease Control reported that in the United States:

118,916 twins were born
6,742 triplets were born
506 quadruplets were born
77 quintuplets + were born
In the US in 2000, 2.9% of all births were twins. Your odds go up considerably if you're using fertility drugs

Fraternal, or 'non-identical' twins are the type which 'run in the family,' so if this is what your grandmother is, then your chances of carrying twins would be higher...However, if you happen to have sets of identical twins, then they don't actually 'run in the family' but would just be coincidental. Either way, you would have some chance of conceiving twins. I myself conceived twins, and twins DO run in my family, however I unfortunately lost one in early pregnancy, as is the case in a LOT of twin conceptions...most mothers-to-be just never know of the loss.
Good luck with TTC your hopeful twins, though!

Anyone can have identical twins. Fraternal twins would need to run in the womans side of the family to increase the chances of having them. The man doesn't determine this.

It could be an old wives' tale, but I have heard the same thing. Fraternal twins run in families and that it skips a generation! My dad's mom also had a set of fraternals, so I am worried about the same thing. I am sure that there is no medical evidence of this, though.

it would all matter on the placement of the little ones. i might say that it possibly should not be a threat, simply by negative aspects in touch. i'm beneficial its been accomplished in the past. Hospitals have not been around consistently, yet do you truly desire to take the negative aspects. i think of you may evaluate a hospital start with little to no intervention IF conceivable. you may get used to the thought a c-section may well be needed. If toddler 'a' is head down you are able to provide vaginally, yet in a hospital they might try this interior the working room becasue toddler 'b' won't be head down, could turn after having room from the 1st toddler being further, etc. there are such diverse issues that could take place. provided that your diabetic too, it would actual be thought to easily have a hospital transport. i may well be hoping to easily grant the two vaginally and not could desire to wade by way of a c-section.

Hello =)

Twins do run in families, yes....

Are you tall? Tall women run a much higher chance of having twins than short women.

My Grandmother had 2 sets of identical twins. She was nearly 6 ft tall, and had a large frame. Her second set was at age 48, and each one weighed more than 10 lbs.....EEEEK!

Namaste, and Happy New Year,

--Tom

Don't know any stats, and they'd just be percentages anyway...

If you get pregnant, you'll find out, and either way I think it will be a joyous occasion for you.

I was totally surprised when my ex was found to be with twins (fraternal, boy and girl)... she had often claimed to be infertile.

Don't stress about it... relax, enjoy sex... and if you have twins... that's cool too.

Much love and good wishes.
