In a way it is a 'trick' that people play on themselves.
The nonverbal part of your mind, the part that controls the motor nerves of your body can create 'involuntary' movements that move the planchette (the little tear drop shaped pointer) to spell out the answer you subconsciously wish to hear. Perversely if you are frightened and superstitious and have a hostile relationship with your subconscious, it may spell the answer that you fear most to hear, Since that part of yourself is sort of like a neglected child who may feel that -any- attention is better than being ignored.
If you know and accept that you are yourself the source - It is a fine way to get details you do not consciously remember but have otherwise retained in the subconscious/nonverbal part of your mind however.
In my opinion it is not any spiritual agency other than your own spirit or that of any other people who also have their fingers touching the pointer with you - if you are using it with several other people.
Is it a ghost or devil or angel or spirit? In my opinion that is very, very unlikely. I do not think such things are impossible. I simply think it is much more likely that we simply find the "supernatural in ourselves so terrifying that we sometimes create either within or without an angel or demon to perform the supernatural act for us..."

It definately takes two people that are able to connect with a source coming through the Ouija. Each person sits facing each other on chairs that will make thier knees the same heighth. Feet flat on the floor and comfy.
Put the board on the knees of each person. Like making a bridge with the board from one person to the other. Always making sure that one persons body doesn't touch the other persons.
It is really important that you get comfy because you might be there awhile.
The board should be lengthwise. Making it so the letters are able to be read from the side that is open. I'm not sure if some people get picky about which way the board is facing...like north, south, east, west..that sort of thing. It didn't matter to us.
It is very important to say a good prayer about protection and and really mean it. A prayer is not a for sure thing that anything will happen or that if it does ..it will all be honky-dorry. But be sure to say it anyway.
Put the planchet in the middle of the board and both you and the other person put thier fingers on each side of it closest to yourself. All 5 fingers very, very lightly. It's hard to do because people start shaking after awhile because thier muscles start to take a crap.
And ask a question that you both agree on before you sit down to do this. The smoother things go..the better.
Both of you need to have your minds clear and concentrate on the question. AND.....it has to be a question that neither of you know but the answer can be found like the next day or something. Like maybe.....'what day of the week was Aunt Ida born?'
It really does work. You just have to weed out the frauds and the jokers and the scaredy cats...
You need to find someone who is serious and not going to freak out at anything..and has good muscle strength. (It is really easy to accidently push that thing when you are trying to keep barely touching it)
Good luck....and...if you don't know what you are doing or have some idea of it.....then...leave it alone.
Have fun...and be safe.

Oh boy! I love this question! It goes back to the repeatedly asked question of whether all that is real can be seen, like the scientific mind of artfuldragon would like you to believe. This is not so.
If you are a spiritually minded person, you believe that there exists what is often referred to as the "unseen". If you are not, you deny the "unseen". Which leads to the much larger question of intelligent design, the existence of God, etc.
But the Ouija board is much simpler. It actually works. Like photons, it can be seen, but not explained. Like the eighty plus percent of DNA that has no direct link to the world of protein manufacture, its primary role, the why and wherefore defy explanation.
I am convinced that the mystery portions of the DNA are not at all like blank sectors on a hard drive, but are instead the conduits for the communication which must exist between all living things and the architect that designed them. The Ouija board is similar, in that it's function defies all explanation, but it somehow communicates with some intelligence that is not resident of the four dimensional reality we can perceive.
If you are a Christian, or an adherent of any of a number of other spiritual persuasions, then you accept that not all of reality can be seen. You see evidence of this in prophecy, as no human can know the future without communicating directly with an intelligence that is outside time. God, for example. The Bible is "inspired", meaning literally "in breathed". The knowledge gained by prophets was inserted directly into their consciousness by God. They were in direct communication with Him. Some were said to have had conversations with Him. Please realize, this could not have happened without the prophet's cooperation. In order to receive the communication, the prophets had to become willing conduits for it. They had to turn on their spiritual receivers, so to speak. They had to be listening.
This is what the Ouija board does. It allows you to drop your disbelief and open up the conduit hardwired into your unconscious self by your DNA. Your mind, your self awareness, cannot be involved. Your conscious mind will tell you what you have been raised from the beginning of your life to believe, that nothing is real it until you see it, that there are no ghosts, that what you see is what you get. Your self awareness will not accept the intangible.
But, you sit with your fingertips poised, barely in contact with a manufactured plastic device, and something deep inside you that you are not aware of finds that you are not suppressing it at that very moment. And that something flips a switch, like you would turn on a radio, and becomes a receiver. And the receiver takes over your muscle control and the plastic device begins to move, seeming to pull your fingers one way and another. What's most puzzling to the scientific minds who watch this, or even experience it, is that both persons touching the device have the same experience, which argues against it being a subconscious event of one of the participants, as they can not both share each other's subconsciousness.
Is it real? Yes. Ghosts are real. Demons are real. God is real. Angels are real. The only question is, once you have dropped your inhibitions and allowed a manufactured toy to suspend your disbelief, what sentient intelligence are you plugged into? If it is not of God, which it most likely is not, it should not be trusted. The information it provides may be accurate, but it may also not be. As was pointed out in a previous response, it is not wise to play this game. The one you are speaking with is probably not a friend.
May the peace of the Lord be always with you!

The Ouija bords is nothing more than a tool. A means of focusing concentration for spirit communication. When used by people that are trained in the proper techniques of such communication they can be quite useful. The problem is that too many untrained people try to use them and wind up making contact with some entity that may not be what it represents itself to be. One should ALWAYS have an experienced person when using such a tool, someone that knows how to work with such things and recognize which entities can be dealt with and which ones should be left alone.

I always thought that if you and the other person were thinking of the same thing, the ouija board would spell it out. That's until my girlfriend and I played it at a party one night and it said I was going to marry God and then we all went to sleep and 3 of us woke up in a triangle around the ouija board and there was a burn mark on the board under where the oracle was at all night.. Kinda creepy. I haven't played with it since.

Ouija boards are a method of using a "familiar spirit" and thus explicitly condemned by the Bible. There is great danger in fooling around with anything which is occult in nature, including Ouija boards. Be not deceived, God is not mocked. Whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. Whosoever shall reap to the wind shall reap the whirlwind. Consider this just a friendly and a Biblical based warning. Stay away!

Ouija boards are completely occult. There is no explanation as to how they work, and people aren't the same after they use them. They say something happened, but they never elaborate. Stay away from them. There may be fake, battery-operated ones out there, but that might just be to fool you into using a real one. Stay away.

Stay away from them, you're inviting satan into your life. Do not give him the opening. He is the father of all lies. George Bush must played with an Ouija board while daddy was off in pursuit of oil and $$$.

This is what I read: Ouija boards work if the subconscious mind of the operator knows, or thinks it knows the answer. The subconscious mind causes the fingers to push the pointer to spell the answers to the questions. The operator of the pointer is unaware of what is taking place.

Ouija boards, like all the tools of mysticism and so-called "psychic phenomenon" are all simplyl tricks or based upon some basic psychological phenomenon. The whole urban myth of Ouija Boards opening a portal to some sort of evil being is based upon the movie, "The Exorcist." It's not based on any facts.
To answer your question directly; yes - it's a trick.
