Funny you mention this. Well, maybe not since I don't really believe in coincidences, but that we attract all of our experiences to ourselvest through vibrations. But...I digress. Anyway...I am reading a really interesting book right now that speaks to that very thing. It is called The Seth Material by Jane Roberts, who is a medium through whom a non-physical entity known as Seth spoke of the true nature of reality, from his non-physical or spiritual perspective.
He mentions that we are whole entities, existing in both the physical and non-physical or spiritual planes and that the physical self that we know in this dimension is merely a fragment of our whole entity. Other fragments of our entities exist in other planes. The dream state for one, the plane of probabilities for another and so on and so forth. It is extremely interesting and thought-provoking material and makes me think that the possibilities of the true nature of our existence are more than I ever thought possible and not nearly comprehensible to our little human brains, as we are so limited by the perspectives of time and space here.

This is an actual belief in some religions and cultures like in Egypt where you had the ka. Some cultures thought there were even 3 or more souls. That would be good because then if you sold one you would still have the other one. Just blame it on the left shoulder. What is a soul?

Paul, the apostle who wrote much of the New Testament, said that he had the exact, same problem!
And he answered BOTH your questions.
He said we have one soul.
But he said the other problem comes because we have two minds that are constantly at war with each other.
He called these two minds, the flesh and the spirit.
The flesh is selfish and only desires to please itself.
The spirit wants to do good and obey God.
To be fair, I should add that the spirit he descibes has come to know God.
So he's really descibing the struggle within the christian mind as he writes.
But the struggle exists in every human being whether they are christian or not.
The difference, according to Paul, is that christians have some help during their struggles and they also have the forgiveness of God.
Our flesh wants to do things which our spirit does not want to do.
We say or do bad things. That's a straight-forward desciption of sin.
God hates sin. But, like any loving parent, He still loves His child. So He encourages the child to admit doing wrong, confess to committing the "crime", if you will.
There may still be punishment, tears, a time out etc. , but then He faithfully promises to forgive us.
He even throws the memory of it away.
Our record is cleared of all the charges, kind of.
There is no mention anywhere in the Bible of our being thrown out of the family of God.
God is a loving Father. He accepts us with all our faults and weaknesses. He will help us to change, but until our mortal body, with it's fleshly mind, dies; we will continue to struggle against sin.
According to Paul, in death, we will recieve a new body. It will have no fleshly mind in it.
Then, for the first time ever, we will be able to live without that struggle against sin.
Feels good just thinking about it.
Makes me want to sing, even. Sing praises and give thanks to God.
And that is part of what we'll do when we get our new bodies. We'll sing. And thank God.

I believe that there are 2 "entities" that inhabit the human mind. One is a voice whispering to you telling you what the world expects of you. this voice originates from the many who have taught us the way the world is. its like a "foreign" entity. we have listened to it all our lives and therefore has a history.
The second one is your "higher" self. the problem is the that if you do not turn off the foreign voice, you'll never hear the higher voice. The foreign voice always tries to get you to think as those before you. the higher self looks at the present situation for answers.

Two inner selfs.... yes, in that sense,.... where we end up doing or saying things we do not intend... this happens because of conflict of various inclinations.

Never heard of two 'souls' but I am fully aware there are many different kinds of 'entities' within human bodies which have no souls.

The existence of one soul is a long shot not backed by evidence, two is stretching the limits past common sense and rationality.....but that's just my opinion.

I never understood where some of my beliefs came from, Deep ideas which seemed to be part of "myself", negative and painful ideas which I never questioned. Recently I have come to believe in the concept of spirit "hitchhikers". These are possibly ancestors or even a spirit to which one may have some Karmic link. Through distress or unanswered need these spirits can attach to the individual and become what appears to to a person as part of the "self". They however are not part of "self" but have their own agenda of need and healing. We can Clear ourselves of these "hitchhikers" through Ceremonies of Healing and come to a clearer perspective of Self.
