You definitely need an international driving licence. My friend drove in India with his country´s licence, was stopped by the police for a routine check and got arrested for not having a valid licence. Apparently only an international driving licence will do. So dont try driving without a proper international licence. As most people have pointed out its not that expensive to hire a car with a driver included and worth the money to be hassle free.

certainly not for the scooters and Royal Enfields in Goa. You don't need ANYTHING. Just jump on.
Can't speak for the "real" India though. Presumably if you were hiring a car you would need an appropriate license. But are you sure you'd WANT to drive a car in India? Some of their overtaking manoeuvres are suicidal .

Firstly I would advise you not to drive, as from experience as an Indian in the UK who tried it I nearly killed myself. The reason is it is a free for all on the road. I would honestly advise you hire a car with a driver, as it is not that expensive, and they will stay with you for your full journey for a fixed price (i.e 2 days). It is just a matter of agreeing to a sum.
Please as a trial patient do not attempt. The Rules are totally haywire. That is by experience. Happy New Year

I always take one abroad just in case - Selected Post Office handles their issue now and not the AA.themselves. You will have to log on to the AA to find out which PO does it - they are few and far between.
