I don't know but it sure is killing the economy. Two incomes is now a neccessity in the modern two adult family. You don't get more for your money, prices just went way up now that they know you have. Feminists ought to kick themselves in the ***, now they HAVE to work, and for the same results.

I think if we were so independant we wouldn't get married to begin with. Divorce has become more acceptable in today's society. Marriage is no longer seen as neccessary by many people---however, there are those of us we see marriage as an honorable, venerable institution--and despite the pressures we have these days we are committed to making our marriages work.
However--despite the fact that it's socially more acceptable for the man to do more stuff around the house and to take on more childcare duties most married households are fundamentally traditional. The wife is expected to take care of the kids, the house and hold down a job. The husband does things like yardwork, home and auto-maintenance and God knows what else. Both sexes dabble in things that have been considered "man's work" or woman's work" but for the most part this is how the division of labor still goes. But still-many households fail to load balance home, life and work and because so much is expected of the woman (sorry guys, but handyman stuff, cars and the yard in no way equal childcare and housework/cooking) she gets tired of all of the crap she has to do and figures it would be easier without "him" to take care of too. She can scale down and live in a condo with her kids and be happy. Maybe you should ask the question "does the existence of condos and co-up housing impact the divore rate?" Think of it---no yard, no exterior maintenence...cereal for dinner. Sigh... tempting, isn't it, ladies? ;)
Women are exhausted these days. I didn't fight in the 70's as part of the Women's Movement to work. This was not my choice. To be honest I would rather stay at home but I can't---we need both incomes to live middle class in the San Francisco Bay Area. In no way does marriage equal independance--that is true. In today's society everyone has more options that are held to be widely acceptable. Several factors have impacted the divorce rate and I think you should examine as many of them as you can before deciding that the "blame"-- or whatever you want to call it-- should fall on the fairer sex.

Absolutely. The woman got power during the war, when the men went to war to fight and there was no one to take care of the families. Today in the US the woman has more say than men.
I heard that once a man was beaten by his wife and when he reported it at the Police station he was arrested, and then never gotto arresting the wife.
The man in the modern America needs protection.

yes in a big way. women now think that they dont need a husband much less a man to survive and try to prove it by getting a divorce. they want to show people that they can be independent and still do good.

considerably. Now they are financially independent and dont want to get married easily at the drop of a dollar and hence fewer divorces.

Could be. Now that women don't have to GET married, let alone stay that way, they have more freedom to end the marriage. Why not take it? Marriage blows. I like my independence.

It appears to have done that but also since the sixties when sex was taken from marrige the divorce rate has sky rocketed so it could be any one of many things.

Sorry Roland but I think that is a no-brainer. Of course it has. When women became able to support themselves they became able to leave toxic relationships at their discretion. Until then it was the husbands decision when to end a marriage. I have to wonder at your questions, dear, if perhaps we aren't bitter today.
