Because of all the electonic mass media coverage of everything. Plus you've got all the network political pundits that interpret what each politician is really saying and what it means to us. We don't even need to think for ourselves anymore. Best of all, they have polls that tell you which way the "wind" is blowing so you can say the politically correct thing and not offend anyone.

An orator is someone simply well-versed in making a long story out of a short insight. Who has 2 hours to stand outside and listen to someone say soemthing that could take someone else less than 10 minutes to say, just as well?

Remember Lincoln's address at the Gettysburg dedication ceremony. The 'celebrated' orator prattled on for about 2 hours; Lincoln spoke less than 10 minutes. Who remembers whom?

I believe that the internet blog is the new town square. It would be cool though. Only now nobody would speak because they would get sued for having an opinion.

Technology has replaced the town square - television, radio, internet/blogging, cell phones, etc. - the same messages are getting out, but through different media.
