There's a lot that can go wrong during labour but it is rare they are deadly. Your doctor will pick up on any complications and if necessary he will take you in for emergency caesararian. The midwives keep a very close eye on you through the labour. Don't stress you will be fine :)

I know there is a thing called Toxemia or Preeclampsia. That can be very dangerous to the mother but not to the baby. It makes the womans blood pressure go up, her ankles swell, things like that.
Its a poison or something toxic in her blood. The woman has a seizure and can die if it gets too bad . So toxemia or preeclampsia just gets worse and she can die from it if they don't catch it in time.
But nowadays usually they do tests for it at the doctors.

Let's just say childbirth practices then were not nearly as safe as they are now. A lot has changed, and very, very few women die during childbirth now, in developed countries.
Beyond that, various medical issues. A girl I know almost died after her son was born due to a pseudo-aneurism that almost wasn't found.

The birthing process is pretty safe now that they monitor everything and have a large staff of doctors on hand...BUT heart failure and hemmorhagin (bleeding out) from the uterus are the leading causes of death during labor. I'm certain there are pleanty of other things that can go wrong...it's a pretty intense process
