I agree it was stupid that he didn't just stick it out. I really love that show and still watch it everyday. Have you seen the E! True Hollywood Story? It's too bad. He just didn't feel comfortable around the guys in the Cast anymore, but he didn't really try to make the situation better. The Cast would go out after recording an episode, but Topher would always just go home. Ashton, Wilmer, and Danny own a restaurant together - that's how close of friends they were. But Topher didn't seem to want any part of that, and he eventually started feeling out of place since everyone else around him was so close and had such great relationships. His best on-set relationships were with Laura and Debra.
That last season and especially that last episode of That '70s Show was so sad! I cried! I wish the show could've continued. But as others have mentioned, it wasn't the '70s anymore - I guess it was just time for the show to end.

The same reason George Clooney left ER at the height of it's popularity. He didn't want to be typecasted. He wanted to test the waters in the movie business. The only thing different is Topher is nowhere near George. But I'm sure he's made enough money on That 70's Show that he doesn't really have to worry about money anymore and when someone gets in that kind of situation, you can't really blame him.
Put yourself in his shoes, let's say you were financially secure. You're not going to spend even 10% of the money you have. Are you going to stay at your job if you're bored with it and tired of your co-workers egos? Will you stay there if you're jealous of your co-workers side jobs and bragging about them all the time? Probably not.

He had a big year in 2004:
In Good Company (2004) .... Carter Duryea
P.S. (2004) .... F. Scott Feinstadt
Win a Date with Tad Hamilton! (2004) .... Pete Monash
and he is due for another one in 2007:
Coxblocker (2007) (pre-production) .... William Cox
Kids in America (2007) (pre-production) .... Matt Franklin
The Crusaders (2007) (pre-production) (in negotiations) .... Jack Greenberg
Spider-Man 3 (2007) (post-production) .... Eddie Brock/Venom
so he needed more time to make movies.

All shows eventually end, and maybe he wasn't feeling the script anymore. It is smart to jump ship before it sinks.
Plus, he has been in a few movies. It's hard to be successful in both areas simultaneously.

I agree with the George Clooney theory, however, Topher Grace is NO George Clooney!!!.....and never will be in that A list....Maybe 5-10 yrs down the road when he can grow some facial hair....Look at the guy on Gray's Anatomy, he was the geek in "can't buy me love" movie, and when he became a "man" he soared to the top....(can't remember the guys name)

Maybe he's a foreward thinker and going for his own version called "that 80's show".
Didn't he play Venom in the new Spiderman movie? That should pay a little bit.

After 7 years wouldn't you be ready for something different. I think he was right to leave. I mean who actually watched That 70s Show after Topher left. I heard it was brutal.

Some actors feel they need to jump the series while they are still hot and land a better deal. it doesn;t always work out that way

What they all think.
"I'm a big star. Hey, I'm THE star of the show! I could do this on my own. I can totally fly solo. Psh, who needs this place... This show will fall apart without me. I'm going to get so many scripts. I'm going to be soooo rich. Ha ha! They're going to be stuck here forever. No, wait. They won't because the show will be canceled without ME! HAHA HAHAHA!"
And I'm sure his manager wasn't begging him to reconsider...
